Spring Break at the Joffrey Ballet School

While my friends sent me accounts of their spring breaks in Europe and beyond, I found myself on a train from DC to New York on Wednesday morning, bound for the Joffrey Ballet School so that I could experience the Ballet Trainee program, get to know the studios, and see the neighborhood.

In short?  I'm in love.

The teachers were strict but made it clear to the students that the corrections were to further their progress, and that each student had value and talent.  The administration was friendly and helpful.  The other students were so very welcoming and I could tell from watching the interactions among the group that they were a tight knit group of friends who learned with and from each other.

The neighborhood is also pretty neat--during lunch break I found two cafes, three juice bars, two health food stores, a yoga studio, a Pilates studio, and the burger chain that has the Alton Burger (so of course I had one for lunch).

I was so happy to experience Russian technique and style in ballet class and for Character class we watched videos of different styles, and it was so interesting to see the girls perform.  I can't wait to join the community there.

Also, I managed to get out to the dorms with a tour group, and the dorms are gorgeous (and come with a kitchenette?? Yes please.)
